We've made the big move. Traci and Jeff relocated to Truckee California on July 7th 2003. They drove cross-country in 5 days, visiting some friends along the way and arrived in Truckee on Friday July 11th. We have been busy working on the house, painting, cleaning and putting our personal touch into it. Some photos of our progress are HERE
Lake Tahoe straddles California's eastern and Nevada's western stateline. It is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake on our continent and the third deepest lake in North America. Tahoe is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide with an average depth of 989 feet, and a maximum depth of 1,645 feet. Tahoe contains an estimated 39.75 trillion gallons of water enough to cover the entire state of California 14.5 inches deep, or the state of Texas with 8.5 inches of water. The water that evaporates from Lake Tahoe every 24 hours could supply the daily requirements of 3.5 million people, yet this evaporation decreases the Lake's depth by only a tenth of an inch.Lake Tahoe never freezes over due to the constant movement of water from the bottom to the surface. In the summer, the surface temperature can rise to around 68 degrees, but in the winter the water temperature remains a constant 39 degrees as water rises from the depths. There are 63 tributaries draining in to Tahoe, but only one outlet at the Truckee River in Tahoe City. Because Lake Tahoe is in both California and Nevada, it is considered an "Interstate Navigable Waterway" and as such, it is protected by the United States Coast Guard.Ê
Tahoe's climate is typically very dry with low humidity. The sun shines on average 75 percent of the time (274 days), although it has been known to snow in all 12 months. The average annual rainfall here is 8.3 inches, and the average snowfall is 216 inches or 18 feet. The total annual precipitation is approximately 30 inches.
ÊThe map on the right shows you where Truckee is situated - Incline Village is where Jeff and Traci went to College and it's approximately 20 minutes from Truckee. Truckee is also 30 minutes from Reno, 2 hours from Sacramento and 4 hours from San Francisco. Truckee has population of approximately 13,000 people and the elevation is 5,820 feet above sea level. Truckee has a fascinating history, especially with the famous Donner Party story - if you are interested in any of this, visit the Truckee Chamber of Commerce Web Site.
